Timber veneer panels, clear finished
Two-pack clear with full UV protection over timber veneer: nothing to hide behind, so the preparation is about restraint.

Clear coating is the opposite problem to colour. There is nothing to hide behind: the grain is the finish, and every mark left in the sanding is permanent.
Veneer is thin and sands through faster than people expect. Once it is through there is no repair that does not show, so the preparation here is about knowing when to stop.
A sealer coat first, then the raised grain cut back: the step that separates a smooth finish from a furry one, and the easiest step in the whole process to skip.
The clear carries full UV protection. That is what slows a pale veneer going orange and a dark one going grey through a run of Queensland summers. The protection is in the coating, not in the timber.
Clear hides nothing. Sand through the veneer and there is no repair that does not show.
Before, and after

- Raw veneer, grain open and dry, no protection
- Two-pack clear with full UV protection, grain sharp and the surface smooth
